Gautham Vasudev Menon – From 'Minnale' to 'Varanam Aayiram'

A spiteful relationship between two college mates intensifies years later when a demure girl walks into their lives in different capacities. This neat romantic entertainer invigorated movie audiences and a debutant director had made it big.

This was how 'Minnale' introduced Gautham Vasudev Menon to Tamil movie goers. General movie audiences expected this director who had apprenticed under Rajeev Menon to stick to romance oriented themes.

A major twist happened when Gautham Menon dished out a fast paced stunner in 'Khakka Khakka'. Not only did the film jolt audiences with its realistic style of narration, but was also packaged well with the onscreen chemistry between Suriya and Jyothika working wonders. A police story like never before in Tamil filmdom. The movie was so successful that it was remade in Telugu with Venkatesh and Asin.

The trend had to be continued and Gautham Menon roped in Kamal Haasan for another police story titled 'Vettaiyadu Vilayadu' which did well but not as well as 'Khakka Khakka'. With the 'Minnale'-style-Gautham-Menon-forgotten, people were hell bent on anticipating a 'Khakka Khakka' from the director every single time.

It was around this time that Gautham seems to have been mighty impressed with the Hollywood flick 'Derailed' and decided to remake it with Sarath Kumar and Jyothika. Although the film started out in a gripping manner something went missing after the 'revelation' scenes that made audiences sit back with lost intensity. Obviously the 'fighter' in Gautham has to rise again after the damp squib and 'Vaaranam Ayiram' seems to be the right foil to do this.

What's more….the film brings Suriya and Gautham together once again. This in itself has the potential to awaken audiences who are in deep slumber thanks to many a disappointing Tamil film of late.

Will 'Vaaranam Aayiram' bring back what Gautham Menon made with 'Khakka Khakka'. Two aspects of the film seem to be in that direction. Harris Jayaraj who has composed all of Gautham Menon's films has truly excelled with 'Varanam Aayiram'. The other aspect is that Suriya looks absolutely dashing not just with looks but also with a plethora of emotions as the story has been designed to dish out a major part of one's lifetime before audiences.
